Lookin' South

After calling California home for a hell of a long time it became obvious that I was going to return to Australia. I didn't know exactly when but things were slowly shaping up & my focus was more & more "Looking South."
I took the theme, wanting to write a song reflecting on this long awaited return. But somehow it just came out as a song about girls. I think some of it is true.... maybe.
Mary spoke of enlightenment her words fell like a feast
She said the things you want the most that's what you need the least.
I followed her up the mountain & got lost up in the pines.
She left me in some hollow there somewhere the sun don't shine.

But me I didn't worry at all
I thoiught we could work it out.
But Mary was lookin' off to the East & I,
I was lookin' south.

Kathleen was a working girl, all day eight hours straight
I'd meet her when the whistle blew down by the factory gate.
Our nights they flowed like music love was reckless & headstrong.
She said "you lack committment" I said "I've done nothin' wrong."

Kathleen's songs were all of struggle,
Her voice was passionate & devout.
She was lookin' for the Revolution & I,
I was lookin' south.

I met Katy along the shore some place where sailors go.
I was lookin' for some answers & I thought that she might know.
I couldn't help but love the way the wind it took her hair.
She wiped the salt spray from her cheek perhaps it was a tear.

She signed aboard a sailing ship
Saw her waving from the bow.
She was lookin' for Barbados & I.
I was lookin' south.

I met a girl from Canada in Queensland on a train.
Three days & nights we travelled north but I forget her name.
We'd sit up in the dining car & talk all through the night.
Sometimes there was a crossing bell sometimes a distant light.

Frost streaked across the window
To seal the cold night out.
She was lookin' off to the darkness & I,
I was lookin' south.

There's oh so much has happened since been married once or twice.
I always get just what I want & I always pay the price.
There's something's you can't leave behind each memory's like a scar.
They'll track you down & find you out no matter where you are.

But still I never worry at all,
It'd do no good no how.
I might sometimes look behind me but still,
I'm lookin' south.
