This song came out of a radio inteview I was listening to while driving around L.A. a few years back. Two guys were talking, about what I can't specifically recall but one mentioned that there were 40,000 homeless in Los Angeles. That number just staggered me at the time (still does). It got me thinking & Fade Away came up pretty quick.
As I used the "40,000" number in the song I wanted to qualify it. After all, are we talking that number in the City of L.A., the County or the entire L.A. basin? I called the LAPD & they politely informed me that they kept no records on that & suggested I try some of the missions. A gentleman at the Midnight Mission gruffly told me that all he knew was that the number changes every day & that basically no-one is counting these people.
God help us all.....
