tall ship
tall ship
In childhood reminiscing, of the games we used to play
Along the creek & through the dunes that led down by the bay.
When the world lay passed an ocean, a wall of deepest green
A young boy thought of ships of course that’d take him ‘cross the sea.
Saw the colliers & the coasters, in a harbor full of dreams
Saw the great white ocean liners burnin’ coal & oil for steam
But I never saw a clipper ship, never saw a man ride so tall
Gone to breakers & oblivion now just pictures on a wall
(chorus) There’s a tall ship on the water
A ghost upon the waves
She looks just like a picture
You see of olden days
She’s pullin’ strong the yard’s braced hard
And all the sails are set
And the waves that dance below her bow
Sing a song, you won’t forget.
And then you see the Pilgrim, know a dream has just begun
Before the mast is not yet past that play is never done
She flies with wings of canvas, hauled aloft by calloused hands
We break our back to make her tack & love her to a man.
And some of us are sailors, & some are all at sea
But we’ll stand aloft to throw sail off &set her sailin’ free
Climbin’ up to heaven, just as far as foot ropes go
Eternity above our heads a heaving deck below
(chorus)

Several years ago I found myself involved with a tall ship, the Pilgrim in Dana Point, California.
I think the greatest thing she taught me is that there is a cure for everything, except possibly sea-sickness. Check out the “Pilgrim” Photo page.
